Cops Shot Six People this Week in the Puget Sound Region, Killing Five: Some Ways to Get Involved
From the Artic Circle Collective…
It’s been a week of disbelief. We all know that cops kill with impunity, but their recent spree has unfolded faster than we can even comment on it.
Posting articles on the internet is, by itself, useless anyway. In informal groups—around kitchen tables, in bars, at cafes, on buses, everywhere—our friends have all been discussing ways we should be responding to police violence. We hope you and yours have been, too. In the near future, we hope those conversations will move beyond familiar acquaintances into new alliances and communities. We can all help this happen by organizing our own discussions now, and attending upcoming events.
What will probably be a large protest of John Williams’ murder is in planning. One local site set the date, but at the Seattle Times has indicated that the information was incorrect and a date will be announced soon.
Tuesday, September 7th there will be a vigil for John Williams at 5:30 at the corner of Howell and Boren—the corner where he was killed. It looks to be organized by the October 22nd Coalition.
And in nearby Tacoma:
Thursday, September 9th: Leaflet distribution and banners to share information about the recent escalation of violence by cops. Meet at 6th Ave and Oaks. 3-6 PM
Friday, September 17th: Anti-Cop Rally and March. Meet at People’s Park at 3 PM
Finally, we’d like to suggest a little postering to get the message out into public spaces in our neighborhoods. Arctic Circle posters available for download have quicken become a little outdated with the speed of the cops’ attacks, but here is a good general poster about police violence. Hopefully we can get some more Puget Sound centered materials up in the near future.
